  • paper purchasing from certified sources

In many forests around the world, logging still contributes to habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples, and violence against people who work in the forest and the wildlife that dwells there. Many consumers of wood and paper, and many forest products companies believe that the link between logging and these negative impacts can be broken, and that forests can be managed and protected at the same time. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is one way to improve the practice of forestry.

FSC certification guarantees that the paper comes from forests that are managed responsibly. Carrying the FSC-certification logo on our products tells the world that we support the highest social and environmental standards in the market. Purchase of FSC-certified paper and print products contribute to conservation, responsible management, and community level benefits for people near the forests that provide the paper.

  • ink from renewable resources

doodad uses renewable substances such as soybean oil and other environmentally renewable resources. Our ink supplier, Hostmann-Steinberg, recognizes the importance of sustainable development in today's industry and manufactures products with organic pigments chosen for their low level of contaminants.

  • recycling

We recycle 100% of our waste paper. This amounts to 4.5 million pounds per year of paper, most of which is converted by paper mills back into various types of paper for re-use. We also collect and recycle 100% of our paper cores and brown paper wraps from incoming paper rolls, as well as 100% (54,000 pounds) of aluminium printing plates.

  • air quality

We use regenerative thermal oxidization (RTO) to control the emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). This technology uses heat, partially reclaimed from the printing process, to destroy over 99% of VOCs before they are released to the atmosphere.

  • pressroom chemicals

We review all pressroom chemicals to ensure we are using the most environmentally friendly versions that we can find. For instance, we use low VOC varieties of blanket wash and fountain solution and our metering roller cleaner (MRC) has 50% less acetone.

  • waste reduction

We are committed to maximizing the yield that we derive from all resources. By reducing paper waste and manufacturing by-products such as VOC’s and using chemicals with lower levels of non-sustainable additives, we mitigate the negative impact that we might otherwise have on the environment. Accordingly, we emphasize continuous improvement in all programs designed to reduce our environmental footprint. Our paper waste program, as just one example, has reduced waste levels by more than 30% since 2007.
